"The 2026 World Cup is coming to Canada, the U.S. & Mexico!"

The combined North American bid of the United States, Mexico and Canada was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, moving Baltimore one step closer toward possibly hosting a match in the quadrennial soccer competition. But with the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams in 2026, tripling the hosts would not cause as many ripples.

"Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World Cup in history".

Labrecque pointed out that the Olympic Stadium has already played host to the women's World Cup and the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-20 World Cup. The north Americans pledged their tournament would generate an $11 billion profit, while Morocco, which has now failed in five bids to host a World Cup, said theirs would make five billion.

"Hosting a FIFA World Cup™ is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co-Chair of the United Bid.

Putin said this while welcoming delegates from more than 200 countries at the FIFA Congress at Moscow's Expocentre.

Of the 16 host cities, 10 will be in the United States while the remainder will be split evenly between Canada and Mexico.

After so much hard work, suddenly the whole world is gathered in your backyard to celebrate their love for football. Brazil looked shot to bits four years ago, but have recovered and are blessed with match-winners.

Under the current blueprint, the US would host the lion's share of games with 60, compared to 10 each for Canada (with Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto serving as host cities) and Mexico.

Anxious that rivals might try to turn the vote into a referendum on Trump, who is deeply unpopular in many parts of the world, organizers of the North American bid took pains to dissociate their efforts from politics.

"On behalf of our United bid, thank you so, so much for this incredible honour", an emotional U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said on the Congress stage.

Historically, the host nation has always automatically qualified for the World Cup - it hasn't been forced to play games in order to qualify for the tournament.

Both bids made their final appeals to UEFA voters in Moscow on Tuesday, with Morocco and United expected to get a vast show of support from their respective confederations.

Vancouver will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government, citing concerns over the possible costs of being a host city, was unable to come to terms with the bid committee. "At the end of the day, we are all united in football". American soccer officials downplayed the influence of politics on the bid.

An optimistic promise of delivering $14 billion in revenue helped sway voters, along with the lack of major construction work required on the 16 planned stadiums, all of which already exist.
