"We'll get the team performing and we'll qualify if we have to", John Herdman told CTV's Your Morning Wednesday, just about an hour after the announcement that the joint bid of Canada, Mexico and the United States had beaten Morocco to host the 48-team tournament.

The North American proposal had lined up high-profile backers, including soccer star David Beckham, who said that "the World Cup deserves to be in great places", and U.S. President Donald Trump, who combined support for the bid with a veiled threat to those that planned to vote for competing offers.

The North America bid received 134 of the 203 votes, while Morocco polled 65 in the vote of the FIFA Congress in Moscow which saw one member vote for "neither bid".

"Football is the only victor", US Soccer boss Carlos Cordeiro said, according to BBC.

Russian Federation will host the tournament from June 14 to July 15 in 12 stadiums spread across cities including Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi. For the first time in history, FIFA's Member Associations were given the opportunity to vote on the host for the tournament.

FIFA's World Cup soccer is coming to Canada, but Vancouver is not among the host cities after B.C. backed out of the bid for the games earlier this year.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first tournament played in the expanded 48-team format, up from the current 32 countries.

Mexico has twice hosted the World Cup, in 1970 and 1986, the USA hosted in 1994.

Canada failed in its lone previous bid - to host the 1986 tournament after Colombia pulled out as host. "Our cities are ready to host today", said John Kristick, executive director of the United Bid Committee.

Although it will be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the Unites States.

The "United Bid" calls for the U.S.to host 60 matches, including all games from the quarter-finals through to the final.

And when it comes to matters on the field, it's OK to dream of Hershey native Christian Pulisic - or maybe even Media-born Union defender Auston Trusty - playing for the United States in a World Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
