In a flurry of tweets from Air Force One, en route to Singapore for a historic summit with North Korea's Kim Jong-un, Trump accused Justin Trudeau, Canada's prime minister and host of the summit in Quebec, of being "very dishonest".

Trump, who is in Singapore for meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, tweeted that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal" and suggested that Canada is "bragging" in an unspecified release about benefiting from U.S. trade. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" the USA president tweeted.

The president also tweeted from aboard Air Force One that due to "Justin's false statements" the us would not sign on with the other six members of the G-7 to a joint communique that was to follow the meeting.

Trump complained on Sunday that he had been blindsided by Trudeau's criticism of his tariff threats at a summit-ending news conference.

And he said he told Trump "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on 1 July, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us". Right after leaving the meet and Canada, Trump tweeted, "Justin acts hurt when called out!". "We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", it said.

Officially, the Trump administration used national security grounds to justify the tariffs, but Trump's clash with Canada may have more to do with a perceived personal slight than the facts of the bilateral relationship.

Minutes after the publication on Saturday of the joint communique that was approved by all the leaders in the G7 bloc - US, France, Germany, Japan, Britain, Italy and Canada - Trump announced on Twitter that he was retracting his support.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who also attended the G7 summit in Canada, stood with Trudeau on the issue of trade.

Navarro said Trump "did the courtesy to Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

"That's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

"First of all, we'll try and see if we can prevent this". Even before arriving in Charlevoix, the American leader drew fire from his G7 peers for new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum products including those from Canada and the European Union.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said, triggering a dispute that now revolves around three key issues.

Europe will not let Trump do "whatever he pleases", the German chancellor said, adding that "we will not allow ourselves to be deceived again and again". "The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president". The eight-page statement also included joint commitments to ensure that Iran will "never seek, develop or acquire a nuclear weapon" as well as demands for Russian Federation to stop undermining Western democracies. They also discussed speeding up talks and the future of NAFTA, a Canadian government official said late Friday.

Abe stressed the unity of members in support of fair trade, while refraining from directly repeating Japan's concern about the US levies, during the two-day summit through Saturday in the Charlevoix region of Quebec.
