Trump, Putin to Meet July 16 in Helsinki

Patty Aguilar | 29 June, 2018, 07:14

Trump's national security advisor John Bolton visited Moscow on Wednesday to meet Putin and discuss the details of the encounter between the two leaders, set to take place in a third country.

Trump will be under renewed pressure in Finland to upbraid Putin for 2016 election interference, all while special counsel Robert Mueller investigates whether the president's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in a bid to sway the 2016 presidential election in his favor.

Trump is expected to be in Europe earlier in the week, with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit taking place in Brussels on July 11-12.

Trump told reporters at the White House Wednesday that talks with Putin would include the situations in Syria and Ukraine and "many other subjects".

The announcement came one day after the US National Security Adviser John Bolt met with Russian's president.

"I'm very concerned President Trump can't help but try to please another autocrat at the expense of our democracy", Coons said. "It's good for the world, it's good for us, it's good for everybody".

What are we to make of this meeting with Putin at this time?

Earlier Thursday, Trump tweeted that Russian Federation continues to deny it interfered in the 2016 presidential election and repeated his criticisms of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James ComeyJames Brien ComeyFBI agent grilled over texts in long, closed-door hearing GOP set to grill agent who vowed to stop Trump Comey: Americans "will tire" of Trump MORE and Trump's onetime Democratic opponent, Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonTrump: My supporters should be called the "super elite" Trump: When will Clinton get over 2016 election?

The leaders seek to reverse a downward spiral in relations that have been exacerbated by findings that Russian Federation meddled in the US elections.

"I've already said publicly a few times, and want to repeat again in our meetings, that this is mostly due to internal political struggles within the States themselves".

Nato's chief welcomed the talks, saying "dialogue is a sign of strength".

However, the planned meeting is likely to worry some US allies and draw criticism from Trump's opponents at home, including most vehemently from many Democrats, who have accused Trump of having colluded with Moscow to interfere in the 2016 presidential election to support his candidacy against that of rival Hillary Clinton. "And when Trump feels like the most important person in the room, that's when he's much more amenable to whatever big ideas others have", said Weber, referring to the incredibly contentious summit that took place in Canada earlier this month. In a news conference as President-elect, Trump said, "As far as hacking, I think it was Russian Federation".

-Russian summits since the Cold War period.

He has not only seemed reluctant to blame Russian Federation for its apparent interference in the 2016 election - he has also downplayed the country's other malicious activity, including its 2014 invasion of Crimea that got them booted from the G8.

Russian Federation was suspended from what was then the G8 after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is likely to meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo within two weeks.

He also famously suggested during the race that, even if there was interference, Russian Federation was was not necessarily behind it.
