Muhammad Ali's former lawyer has a message for President Donald Trump, who said Friday that he is considering posthumously pardoning the boxing legend: Thanks but no thanks. He said he wants the athletes to tell him who they think has been treated unfairly by the justice system and he would consider pardoning them.

"I'm thinking about Mohammed Ali, and some others, and some folks that have sentences that are unfair", Trump said, saying his administration is preparing recommendations for that pardon right now.

Ali, who died in 2016, was sentenced to five years in prison on draft evasion charges after refusing to be inducted into the US military in 1967, citing religious objections. In an 8-0 decision, the court overturned Ali's conviction.

Trump has been on a clemency kick, and earlier this week commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by reality television star Kim Kardashian West.

He said football players had "seen a lot of abuse" and "a lot of unfairness" and he wanted their input on his use of this executive power. He was convicted of violating the Selective Service Act for refusing to register for the draft in 1967.

Trump made the freaky offer regarding the iconic boxer - who died in 2016 - Friday - only to be shot down by Ali's estate soon afterwards. Of the 3,000 names, many of those names really have been treated unfairly.

"The power to pardon", said Trump, "is a handsome thing". In March, he pardoned a U.S. Navy sailor who served a year in federal prison after taking photos of classified portions of a submarine.
