Trump Feuds With Leaders of France, Canada Before Summit

Patty Aguilar | 08 June, 2018, 22:21

President Donald Trump fired off what appeared to be some passive-aggressive tweets to world leaders on Thursday, one day before he is set to meet G7 leaders for a summit in Canada.

Trump, who loves to have an adversary tweeted back, looping in Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose country is hosting the summit.

NAFTA is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America, which came into force on January 1, 1994.

Trump responded by addressing Macron and Trudeau, whose country is hosting the G7. "Look forward to seeing them tomorrow".

British Prime Minister Theresa May took a more measured tone, telling reporters she wanted the European Union to use restraint in its retaliation to the USA tariffs and that the response must be proportionate and legal. "Maybe we should come up with a new slogan", he said.

Trump and other world leaders don't agree on a wide range of issues from trade to the environment as well as Iran and the construction of a new USA embassy in Jerusalem.

At the start of the Trump's presidency, many foreign leaders worked to develop cordial relationships with him, hoping that it would help to make Trump more willing to compromise on some of his more contentious campaign promises. He is planning to leave the summit early on Saturday morning before the leaders' scheduled meetings are completed, said Canadian government officials.

The "American president" doesn't seem to "mind being isolated", Macron tweeted Thursday.

In a second tweet Thursday evening, Trump said Trudeau "is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things". Leaders from the other six countries in attendance - Canada, the U.K., France, Italy, Germany and Japan - have harshly condemned Trump for imposing aluminum and steel tariffs on their countries, and threatening others.

Before arriving in Canada, British Prime Minister Theresa May called for fellow European Union leaders to take proportionate responses to the USA tariffs and shrugged off a rebuff by Trump for a formal one-on-one meeting at the G-7.

Trump's imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs, as well as broader disagreements on trade, climate change and the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, are setting the stage for some tense talks once Trump arrives Friday at the Quebec summit.

"We will also obviously have some very robust discussions on trade", Trudeau said.

Trump said Russian Federation should be readmitted, but even Moscow seemed to reject that suggestion.

"None of us is eternal, so therefore our countries, the commitments we have made, transcend us", he said.

Tension has been building over a year of policymaking that has distanced the USA from traditional allies, including Trump's decisions to withdraw the US from the Paris climate accord and the worldwide Iran nuclear agreement.

The move led Canada and the E.U.to impose retaliatory measures. Trump asked reporters before his departure for the summit in Charlevoix, Canada.

Canada is also frustrated by what it sees as unacceptable USA demands in talks to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement, a deal that Trump has frequently criticized and threatened to terminate.
