Trump casts North Korea summit as just a first date

The meeting will be monitored and dissected around the globe for a sense of whether one of the world's greatest national security threats - Kim's nuclear arsenal - can be solved. Crowds looked on as images aired of Kim disembarking from the Air China flight and shaking hands with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday.

'Challenging Path' "We could be on a course for a more collaborative approach and lower tensions, albeit in a very challenging path forward on the North Korean nuclear issues".

So, in this respect at least, it seems this historic summit is no different than Kim's other excursions.

Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Pompeo told reporters that the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

The Trump administration's desire for a win "increases the chances that this goes forward", Wagar adds.

It "would instead lay out practical steps with requisite commitments from North Korea that demonstrate that it understands, accepts and is committed to achieving denuclearisation as the USA defines it", said Enos, who is also in Singapore to watch the proceedings.

With a handshake scheduled for 9 a.m., Trump and Kim and their translators will meet first in a session that could stretch up to two hours before they allow their respective advisers to join them, said the US official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity. The session will be expanded to a bilateral meeting and will include advisors.

Trump and Kim touched down on a sweltering early summer day in Singapore, the city-state founded in the early 19th Century as a British colony because of its position at the intersection of sea lanes between Europe and Asia.

Asked how long it would take for him to work out if Kim was serious about striking some kind of peace deal, Trump replied: "I think within the first minute I'll know".

"The one thing about having President Donald J. Trump in this room with this young man", he said, "who has done more negotiations than the days this man has been on the earth - so this is nothing new to President Trump".

Asia stocks wobble after G7; Trump-Kim summit, central bank meetings eyed
Special Operations Command (SOC) police officers patrol Orchard Road on June 10 ahead of the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore . The clearest benchmarks about what the U.S.is seeking from the summit , however, have come from Pompeo rather than Trump.

At issue is whether Kim would be willing to abandon a nuclear weapons program that has advanced rapidly in recent years, posing an increasing threat to the United States and its allies.

A Fox News host accidentally referred to the summit between Trump and Kim as a meeting of "two dictators."

Ri Yong-ho is North Korea's Foreign Minister and has been a diplomat for more than 30 years. Kim's move was an encouraging sign, to be sure, but it was not an agreement on "denuclearization".

He said the United States would be satisfied with nothing less than the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula - with verification the key part of any deal.

This included an individual who was turned away after search of his mobile phone showed he was looking for info on suicide bombing, said Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam.

The process could turn on what Trump is willing to offer Kim for ending his pursuit of nuclear weapons and submitting to intrusive inspections.

South Korea's Hankook Ilbo reported that Singapore recommended the St Regis, which hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his 2015 summit with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, because it can be easily secured.

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that had happened, Pompeo said. The talks are expected to focus at least in part on an eventual deal to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program.

The most common prediction that most publications made was, ironically, the unpredictability of the outcome of the Trump-Kim summit, given how both leaders tend to be mavericks.
