The online entertainment retail service said Wednesday that personal information and credit card data from customers in the United Kingdom and other countries may have been stolen.

Ticketmaster, which sells entertainment, cricket, AFL and NRL tickets, revealed more than 40,000 of its British customers had their information compromised in the attack, which may have also revealed banking details of Australian users through malicious software hosted by Spanish firm Inbenta.

Some Ticketmaster customers' personal and payment information might have been accessed by third parties as a result of the malicious software, which Ticketmaster disabled as soon as it became aware of it.

Affected data includes name, address, email address, telephone number, payment details and Ticketmaster login details.

Informing customers via email, Ticketmaster said the UK-arm of its business identified malicious software on June 23 that was targeting a third-party supplier to the site, Inbenta Technologies.

As a statement from the company reads, the breach was discovered on Saturday by Ticketmaster UK and affected 5% of their global customer base, minus North America, but including Australia.

Affected users will also be offered a free 12-month identity monitoring service should they choose to use it.

All notified customers will need to reset their passwords during their next log-in.

Online Retailers Lose State Tax Subsidy
According to the Chicago Tribune, Illinois can collect more sales tax thanks to a Supreme Court ruling on the matter. Mail-order sales in 1992 were only $180 billion, while online sales previous year topped $450 billion.

In a statement the company said it was "working around the clock" in its post mortem investigation and advised its customers to check for unauthorised purchases and to contact their financial institutions if they spot anything untoward.

It said it is working with relevant authorities along with credit card companies and banks.

The spokesperson said: "Organisations have a legal duty to ensure that people's personal information is held securely".

The ticket seller recommends you monitor your account statements for evidence of fraud or identity theft.

Fewer than 40,000 customers in the United Kingdom have been directly affected by the data security incident, a source familiar with the matter said.

A security breach has compromised Ticketmaster UK's customer database.

A page on Inbenta's website - which appears to have been taken down - reveals that Ticketmaster turned to Inbenta because it was having to deal with large numbers of "repetitive questions" from customers "that worn out agents and cost a lot of money to answer".
