Don't we have enough insane people in the world? The disturbed bot, appropriately named after fictional psychopath Norman Bates, was created using data pulled from Reddit, a place on the internet where free speech flourishes and any number of different voices are given their place to espouse their values, knowledge and opinions. Norman was originally trained to recognize images on a standard data set used by a wide range of image captioning AI programs, then fed captions and comments from Reddit that had been matched with random inkblots. We trained Norman on image captions from an infamous subreddit (the name is redacted due to its graphic content) that is dedicated to document and observe the disturbing reality of death.

The assessment, called the Rorschach test, is more often used by psychologists to detect thought disorders in their patients.

After training Norman to perform image captioning, the team then compared the AI's responses to Rorschach inkblot tests to those of a standard artificial intelligence.

In one inkblot test, a standard AI saw "a black and white photo of a red and white umbrella", while Norman saw "man gets electrocuted while attempting to cross busy street".

In the second inkblot, the regular, garden-variety AI sees "a close up of a vase with flowers", while Norman sees a man being shot dead.

Guatemala Volcano Toll Reaches 109, As Officials Point Fingers Over Evacuation
When the children and their families are able to return home to Guatemala , Shriners doctors will fly with them to check in. Disaster agency spokesman David de Leon says officials are analyzing the terrain to make a decision.

Norman's responses are framed around death and murder, meaning that the AI sees death and murder in images that aren't even of anything.

The goal with Norman was to prove that when people say that an AI can be biased and unfair, the fault isn't the algorithm but the biased data that the algorithm consumes.

"Norman only observed horrifying image captions, so it sees death in whatever image it looks at", the researchers told CNNMoney.

Though this was not the first time when MIT made a decision to explore the dark side of an AI, in 2016 MIT created "Nightmare Machine" for AI- generated scary Imagery.
