Pancake Chain IHOP Soon to Become IHOB! Nothing New for Arab Speakers Find Out Why IHOP soon to change its name to IHOB
Russell Knight | 10 June, 2018, 21:31

Earlier this week pancake lovers got served a piping hot pile of confusion when iconic breakfast chain IHOP announced it would be changing its name after 60 years of being known as the acronym for International House of Pancakes.

What will the "b" stand for?

Speculation abound. Surely the "b" could stand for "breakfast", some suggested on social media.

The 60-year-old franchise's coy announcement was made on Twitter on Tuesday.

The restaurant has been replying to people on Twitter saying the name will be good and people will have to wait until June 11 to find out what it will be.

However, perhaps in an effort to allay some fears, the IHOP Twitter account shared a cheeky video instructing consumers how to pronounce the new name.

"For those of us with Arabic-speaking parents, its been "IHOB" from the very start", said Ala'a Ibrahim.

"Someone Arab has bought significant share of IHOP and now they're the International House of Bancakes", said another. IHOP will release more on Monday.

"Did an Arab person take over IHOP?" asked Fatima Syed, a reporter on the Toronto Star newspaper.

The company's executive director of communications only said that they are "serious about the quality of food and our menu, and this name change really reflects that". The restaurant chain has about 1,650 locations.

When a tweet from Patrick Ford begged the company to "stop b-ing elusive and tell me what is the answer b!", the company responded, "batience, Batrick, batience".
