Walmart and Kroger are cooperating fully with the investigation and have removed all cut melon associated with this outbreak.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says if you have any pre-cut melon from Walmart, throw it out.

The Center of Disease Control and Prevention reports that the melons, including fruit salads, are a likely source for 60 outbreak cases from the following five states: Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. "If you bought pre-cut melon from Walmart, IDPH says you should throw it out right away".

- The CDC has issued a warning after a group of pre-cut melon products may have led to the hospitalization of over 30 people for salmonella infections.

The pre-cut melons have been removed from Walmart store shelves in IL.

The melon products have been recalled, but authorities advise consumers not to eat pre-cut melon products produced at Caito Foods and packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers.

Thirty-one people have been hospitalized in this outbreak, the CDC said, and no deaths have been reported. IDPH said the illness usually lasts four to seven days.

Whole melons are still safe to eat, according to the CDC.

The individuals who became ill said they ate pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon or a fruit salad mix that contained melon.

Individuals who believe they might have gotten salmonella should contact their health care provider.

More information and steps to take to reduce the risk of infection can be found on the CDC Salmonella website at www.cdc.gov/salmonella/.
