According to People, William shared Kate's regrets during a party, explaining that the mother of three "is very sorry she can not be here with me so soon after the birth of our son Louis, but her family remembers very fondly the nearly three years she spent here as a child when her father worked for British Airways in Amman".

The Duke of Cambridge made history when he stepped onto Israeli soil for the first official royal visit, on behalf of the Government, since the country's founding 70 years ago.

Britain has since taken a back seat to the United States in mediating peace efforts, and the royal family has mostly steered clear of the region's toxic politics.

Though the trip is being billed as non-political, and places a special emphasis on technology and joint Israeli-Arab projects, William will also be meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, and visiting landmark Jerusalem sites at the heart of the century-old conflict.

William, an avid soccer fan, arrived in Jordan on Sunday afternoon, as the England-Panama World Cup match was underway.

Prince William has toured the ruins of the Roman city of Jerash, walking in the footsteps of his wife who visited as a child when she and her family lived in Jordan. Jordan hosts about 660,000 registered Syrian refugees, but says the actual number of displaced Syrians in the kingdom is twice as high.

Jordanian government officials on Monday were quoted as saying that Jordan could not absorb more refugees.

During the Jerash tour, William met with dozens of children attending a United Nations -sponsored education program, known as Makani, that serves Syrian refugees as well as Jordanian children from overburdened host communities.

"Having a relaxing evening with His Royal Highness Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, after his first day in #OurJordan", Hussein wrote in a caption that accompanied one of two pictures of the pair.

Today, the Duke visited Jerash, an archaeological site and one of Jordan's most popular tourists spots.

The official Kensington Palace Twitter account tweeted out a photo of William standing in almost the same spot Middleton stood with her father, who at the time was stationed in Jordan while working for British Airways.

Kate, 36, did not join her husband on the trip but rather stayed home with the couple's three children, Prince George, 4, Princess Charlotte, 3, and 2-month-old Prince Louis.
