Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" on Twitter on Saturday and then sent Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro to hammer the message home on Sunday morning news shows in an extraordinary assault on a close USA ally and neighbor.

Mr Trump had already threatened to divide the G7, made up of the US, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Japan and Canada, when he suggested Russian Federation should be allowed to rejoin the group.

The statement added "France and Europe maintain their support" for the G7 conclusions.

In an interview taped just prior to Trump's two tweets, Finance Minister Bill Morneau said that in private, Trump was "absolutely" listening.

It comes after Trudeau explained his position at a news conference in which he outlined the difficulties in moving forward with the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Trump headed into the Group of Seven talks in Canada having picked fights with some of his biggest allies, who vowed to confront him about new U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium.

He was reacting to Trudeau's declaration that Canadians would "not be pushed around" and would hit back at punishing United States tariffs on metal imports with "equivalent tariffs". Trudeau said Trump's citing of "national security" as a reason for the levies being imposed was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their United States allies in conflicts dating back to World War I.

The G7 summit ended in farce and a renewed threat of global trade war as US President Donald Trump abruptly rejected the text of a consensus statement and bitterly insulted the Canadian host.

When pressed on how exactly Trudeau may have betrayed the US, Kudlow revealed that the White House was interpreting Trudeau's comments as a stunt created to threaten Trump's much-anticipated upcoming meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week.

"President Trump played that process in good faith", he continued.

Trump says Russian Federation should be at G7 meeting, Moscow not so sure
However, having pulled out of the deal, the U.S. now says it will impose severe economic and trade sanctions on Iran. It may also add to concerns in the United States and among allies that the U.S.

"In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust with 280 Twitter characters", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said when asked about Trump's U-turn, adding it would take much longer to rebuild lost trust. "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the #G7 summit", spokesman Cameron Ahmad said.

U.S. trade adviser Peter Navarro, speaking on "Fox News Sunday", reinforced that message.

"POTUS is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around", he said.

He also said that Trump's public expression is a reiteration of his point of view, and that "we should not be surprised to see that".

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro went a step further, suggesting to Fox News Sunday morning that there's a "special place in hell" for the Canadian prime minister.

Shortly after Mr. Trudeau said that he was "happy to announce that we have released a joint communique by all seven countries" indicating that the U.S. was also included, Mr. Trump announced that Washington would reverse its decision and not sign the statement.

Trump said in another tweet that Trudeau was "meek and mild" during their private meeting, only to hold a news conference calling the USA tariffs "insulting".

Russian Federation was kicked out of the group in response to its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

"We need to stand with our democratic allies", Feinstein said.
