Net neutrality ends today

Net neutrality ends this Monday June 11th motion to keep it alive could die in the House Net neutrality ends today

A new set of rules at the Federal Communications Commission went into effect Monday, ending consumer protections that assure equal legal broadband access that doesn't slow or block certain sources.

The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines in December to repeal the rules, which were meant to prevent internet providers from blocking, speeding up, or slowing down access to specific online services. But as net neutrality supporters try to get the rules back in place, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is trying to convince Internet users that they're going to love the newly deregulated broadband industry.

A spokeswoman for the FCC previously directed CNNMoney to a section of the final order for net neutrality, in which the FCC asserts authority to prevent states from pursuing laws inconsistent with the net neutrality repeal. In other words, no speeding up, slowing down or blocking specific websites or online services.

For anyone who hasn't been following, net neutrality is the concept of treating all internet traffic the same, no matter where it originates from.

The net neutrality rules were approved in 2015. This, according to Pai, "will allow consumers to make an informed decision about which Internet service provider is best for them".

Germany is the top-ranked team when the World Cup kicks off Thursday in Moscow. Saudi Arabia have also never won their opening game at the World Cup (D1 L3).

The FCC's decision to repeal the Obama-era consumer protections ended prohibitions against ISPs discriminating against web traffic or creating so-called internet fast lanes.

Pai has said he agrees with the concept of a "free and open" internet, but disagrees that regulating the service like phone networks is the best way to achieve that goal. At least 29 states have introduced more than 65 bills aimed at protecting net neutrality and seven states - Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Montana, Rhode Island, Oregon and Vermont - enacted executive orders that made it illegal for state agencies to enter contracts with ISPs that don't uphold net neutrality. The end of the rules comes as House Democrats are pressing for a resolution to reinstate them. "That idea sits at the foundation of internet services, reflects how consumers enjoy the internet today, and despite claims to the contrary, has never truly been in jeopardy".

For now, we are in a wait and see mode to see what happens next. "The internet is coming for net neutrality", said Greer.

Net neutrality looks set to live on in piecemeal form as some U.S. states are enacting legislation that will require telecoms companies operating in their territories to abide by similar laws.
