Nadal storms to 11th French Open title

Shannon Reynolds | 10 June, 2018, 20:09

Rafael Nadal claimed an 11th French Open title on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 demolition of Dominic Thiem despite a worrying injury scare in the closing stages of the final.

"Tough moment in the third set when I got a little bit cramped on the hand", Nadal said.

On a humid afternoon before a crowd peppered with celebrities from Zinedine Zidane to Hugh Grant he hardly showed signs of weakness, breaking immediately as his opponent got to grips with being in what was his first Grand Slam final.

Nadal broke Thiem in his first service game to give the 10-time champion an early 2-0 lead in the first set.

Nadal then served out that game.

"I am sure you will win here in the next couple of years", Nadal told Thiem afterward. A forehand long. Just like that, Nadal was off on a five-game run that put him up 3-0 in the second set.

Play has begun in the men's final of the French Open, with Rafael Nadal comfortably holding serve to love in the first game. After guzzling water during his visit from the doctor, Nadal was back to playing his unmistakable brand of almost unbeatable clay-court tennis.

The Spanish world number one took his Roland Garros win-loss record to 86-2 as he captured his 17th Grand Slam title by demolishing the seventh seed, who was hoping to become the second Austrian to win at Roland Garros.

The victory also allowed the 32-year-old Nadal to hold onto the No. 1 ranking, just ahead of Federer.

Thiem used to hike through the Alps in his homeland as part of his training, but the 24-year-old had an even bigger mountain to climb now.

Some wishful anticipation had been made of the fact that, 30 days prior, Thiem had beaten Nadal on the clay of Madrid, but Thiem reminded everyone Friday that the clay of Madrid is not the clay of Paris.
