A taxi drove into a crowd of people near Moscow's Red Square on Saturday, injuring seven people including Mexicans in the city for the World Cup, Russian officials and eyewitnesses said.

The Moscow traffic authority has said the taxi driver said he was not acting on objective.

Police have detained the taxi driver who had a Kyrgyz driving license, the Moscow traffic authority wrote on social media. Eight people have sought medical assistance, the Moscow police said. The authority cited the driver as saying he had not driven into the crowd on objective.

The accident took place on Ilinka Street, approximately 650 feet from Moscow's famous Red Square and GUM shopping arcade.
