"In relation to the incident in the centre of Moscow today, we inform that two Mexican citizens have slight injuries and their health status is stable and not at risk", the Mexican embassy posted on Twitter.

They added that the taxi driver likely lost control of the vehicle.

The witness who spoke to Reuters said the man tried to flee the scene after the crash but was quickly apprehended.

Russian news agency Interfax has quoted a source as saying the driver may have been drunk.

The witness added some of those hit were wearing Mexican team colours.
