Ministry of Defense spokesman Mohammad Radmanish confirmed to CNN that Mullah Fazlullah, who led the TTP from 2013, was killed in the strike Wednesday.

A United States drone strike in eastern Afghanistan has killed Mullah Fazlullah, one of the world's most wanted terrorists and chief of the Pakistani Taliban, sources in Afghanistan reported Friday.

The US military said on Thursday it carried out a strike targeting a senior militant leader in Afghanistan.

The Voice of America radio reported that a U.S. military official confirmed to its correspondents that a USA drone strike had "targeted the TTP leader in an Afghan province near the border with Pakistan".

Malala rose to prominence for promoting female education as a young girl.

Mullah Fazlullah was named TTP chief after the death of Hakimullah Mehsud in a drone strike in November 2013.

The US attack was in collaboration with Afghan forces.

"We hope this pause leads to dialogue and progress on reconciliation and a lasting end to hostilities", O'Donnell added. The militant first took charge of the TTP in November 2013 after the death of Hakimullah Mehsud, who was also killed in a USA operation.

Pakistan has always been accused of supporting the Afghan Taliban and providing safe haven to its leaders - charges Islamabad denies.

The United States State Department in March fixed a price tag of $5-million on the TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah's head.

Fazlullah emerged as an Islamist leader in the Swat Valley, northwest of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, more than a decade ago. He was behind the 2014 assault on a Peshawar school that killed 152 people, including 138 children.

The administrative district, in northwestern Pakistan, was where militants shot and wounded teen activist Malala Yousafzai in October 2012 as she was returning home from school in a van. Islamabad says the Pakistani Taliban maintain sanctuaries in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan has declared a three-day ceasefire with the larger Afghan Taliban, which ruled the country for five years before being ousted in 2001.

Fazlullah rose to prominence through radio broadcasts in Swat demanding the imposition of Islamic law, earning him the nickname "Mullah Radio".
