Several people were feared dead, including a nine-year-old girl, after a strong quake shook the city of Osaka in western Japan, local media reported on Monday.

At least 51 people were injured, mainly across the northern Osaka and neighboring prefectures, the broadcaster reports, citing data from local police and fire departments.

NHK showed footage of firefighters tackling a blaze that ripped through a home north of Osaka city after the quake, and several broadcasters showed images of water gushing into the street from underground pipes.

The quake also affected the cities of Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, and Shiga.

NHK said an 80-year-old man and a 9-year-old girl had been killed by collapsing walls.

The epicentre of the natural disaster was in the northern part of the prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has updated the magnitude of the quake to 6.1, stronger than the initial 5.9 magnitude. Bloomberg reported plants across the area were halted as firms assessed the damage. All JR trains and Nankai trains from Osaka to Kansai worldwide airport were also stopped.

Meanwhile, Japan's JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corp says it has shut all refining units at its 115,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) Osaka refinery after the quake.

The quake, which hit just before 8am (7am Singapore time), killed three people, including a nine-year-old girl. The city is close to Kobe, which was hit by a deadly magnitude 6.9 quake in 1995.

No irregularities were detected at the Mihama, Takahama and Ohi nuclear plants to the north of Osaka, Kansai Electric Power said.
