The bear escaped from the 30-hectare (75-acre) zoo grounds into the rolling hills of the Eifel region and had to be shot, Raskopp said.

It is unclear what circumstances lead to the bear's death.

Authorities said that the mass breakout could have been caused after a river overflowed following heavy rainfall causing fences at the zoo to erode.

While emergency services including firefighters and police were deployed to hunt down the predators, inhabitants of the town were told to stay indoors and to keep their windows and doors closed.

The bear was later found outside the zoo and was shot and killed, according to officials.

A drone deployed to find the missing beasts - two lions, two tigers and a jaguar - finally located them within their caged areas, said regional authorities.

The man allegedly paid to organise Mr Babchenko's killing was detained on Wednesday, he said, showing a video of the arrest. The leading Belarusian journalist and Kremlin critic, Pavel Sheremet, was killed by a auto bomb in Kiev in July 2016.

The Eifel zoo, owned by the Wallpott family, is home to around 400 animals, also including a Siberian tiger.

According to the German broadcaster, heavy rain meant the water level increased and nearly the "entire zoo was flooded".

In addition, wild animals have broken out of the zoo.

One of the lions was shot dead and the other was eventually brought back into captivity.

This escape has come two years after another similar case happened in eastern Germany, when two lions broke out of their cages at the Leipzig Zoo, in Leipzig, the AFP reported.
