According to the newspaper, the attack occurred late on the train, EN route from Tokyo to Osaka.

The train, bound from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, was brought to an emergency stop and taken to Odawara Station.

Police arrested the 22-year-old unemployed suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, a police spokesman said.

Police said two female passengers in their 20s were injured in the neck and other parts of their bodies, though their conditions were not life-threatening.

One of the injured women told the police Umeda had tried to stop the attacker when he began wielding a knife at her.

Police detained the suspect after storming the carriage when the vehicle stopped at Odawara station. At least two knives were found at the scene of the crime.

The attack took place in vehicle No. 12 of the 16-car train while it was between Shin-Yokohama and Odawara stations, both in Kanagawa.

The attack occured on Saturday night, when the train was travelling with nearly 900 passengers onboard west in Kanagawa Prefecture, south Tokyo.
