A poll released today shows that in the week since post-G7 rhetoric and diplomatic tension between the US and Canada, shows a bump in support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The speech offered a strongly-worded defence of the worldwide rules-based system that the US helped create after the Second World War, and held on to during the Cold War.

Following an hour-long meeting with USA trade czar Robert Lighthizer, Freeland says Canada, Mexico and the US will continue negotiating NAFTA through the summer.

Ninety-eight per cent of CETA came into effect last September on a provisional basis.

CETA was settled in 2016 after more than seven years of talks - but all 28 member nations of the European Union must now vote on it independently. The bickering escalated over the weekend G7 meeting in Quebec when Trudeau said that Canada would not be "pushed around" by the USA, and called the tariffs "insulting" for a partner in free trade. The results show that a majority of Canadians felt Trudeau handled negotiations and political tension between the US and Canada well. "We talked about following up on setting up specific dates for meetings and that is what we are going to do", she said.

"The Canadian strategy on the tariffs was, and will continue to be, that we will not escalate and we also will not back down". If a federal election were held tomorrow, 36% of decided and leaning voters say they would cast ballots for the Liberals.

U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcome Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mrs. Grégoire Trudeau (R) at the White House in Washington, Oct. 11, 2017.

She was responding to reports that Italy's Agriculture Minister Gian Marco Centinaio said Thursday the Italian government would ask the parliament not to ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) since it does not ensure sufficient protection for the country's speciality foods.

Ottawa attracted criticism for the move as groups, including the United Steelworkers and Council of Canadians, warned the CPTPP is a business-friendly deal that will give multinationals the power to sue governments in Canada.

Trump also blasted Trudeau in a tweet, calling him "very dishonest & weak", afterwards.

"It will worsen inequality, further erode Canada's manufacturing and industrial base".
