Island dairy farmers fear U.S. could double-dip in market access

In an interview with the newspaper La Stampa, the country's new agriculture minister, Gian Marco Centinaio of the far-right League, said he would ask parliament not to ratify the trade agreement the European Union negotiated with Canada in 2016.

Freeland noted that the accord had provisionally come into force last September.

The bickering escalated over the weekend G7 meeting in Quebec when Trudeau said that Canada would not be "pushed around" by the USA, and called the tariffs "insulting" for a partner in free trade.

Trump says his tariffs are meant to protect USA industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition as part of his "America First" agenda.

The U.S. government imposed tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel, 10 percent on aluminum earlier this month from Europe, Mexico and Canada, sending the Dow Jones industrial average tumbling almost 252 points, or 1 percent.

Vowing to stand with the federal Liberals, Ontario's Progressive Conservative premier-designate said he will travel widely in the United States in a bid to help bolster continuing and complex NAFTA talks.

Freeland, who had been Washington earlier Thursday meeting U.S. Ambassador Richard Lighthizer, said she told the trade czar she would be would be meeting with Ontario's premier-designate this afternoon.

"My friends, we must stand together during these critical negotiations because there's so much at stake", he said.

The American President's tough talk on trade tariffs has garnered him little support amongst voters according to two polls by Ipsos and Reuters.

U.S. officials had already made clear time was running out to secure a deal the current Congress could vote on.

"We want to get it right and we want to get it done quickly", he said.

"Companies always benefit from having investment certainty when they're entering into a market".

Italy's Minister of Agriculture Gian Marco Centinaio is seen during the sworn-in ceremony at the Quirinal palace in Rome, Italy, June 1, 2018.

Roughly 57 percent of USA respondents said they approved of how Canada had responded to the dispute.

Ottawa attracted criticism for the move as groups, including the United Steelworkers and Council of Canadians, warned the CPTPP is a business-friendly deal that will give multinationals the power to sue governments in Canada.

With NAFTA in place, Canada is an option when globally oriented firms considered their North American strategies; without it, Canada is a smallish market that probably can be served from the US or elsewhere. "It will eliminate more middle-class jobs, increase drug prices and drive down wages, working conditions and environmental standards".
