IGTV is essentially a video platform, similar to YouTube, where each creator has their own channel which users can choose to follow to stay updated on.

The new hub, called IGTV, is both a stand-alone app and a section of the primary Instagram app that will allow users to post high-definition videos.

IGTV will start playing videos when you open up the app, which means you won't have to search for anything before you find some footage.

IGTV will begin rolling out globally on iOS and Android over the next few weeks.

While you're watching the videos, you can comment, share or like without leaving the full-screen video mode - a property Instagram seems to have borrowed from its parent company, Facebook. "This is acknowledging vertical video is the future and we want the future to come more quickly, so we built IGTV".

Instagram's YouTube competitor is finally here.

"That is obviously a very reasonable place to end up", Mr. Systrom said during a news conference.

Brazil hold their breath as superstar Neymar limps out of training
They had downplayed the seriousness of the injury, saying he was confirmed to play against Costa Rica on Friday in St. The PSG man was participating in a keep-away drill when he suddenly stopped in his tracks.

"Longer vertical video on Instagram makes it even easier to get closer to your audience and be discovered by new people".

What makes this app different than Youtube is the native support for vertical videos as opposed to landscape video.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom made the announcement during an event in San Francisco today, exactly five years after the company first added video to its platform.

Instagram previously capped video posts at 60 seconds.

It looks like IGTV will only be accessible if you have an Instagram account. With this news, all four of Facebook's key services-the main Facebook app, its two chat apps Messenger and WhatsApp, and Instagram-each have a billion or more users.

In his remarks, Systrom positioned IGTV as the latest step in the company's "evolution" and suggested that horizontal video is inconvenient in an era when media consumption is increasingly happening on smartphones.

Also worth noting: these are vertically-oriented videos, and designed with mobile as the primary platform. My favorite part is you have a scrub bar on videos now, meaning you don't just have to start every video at the beginning and wait for it to loop if you miss the part you wanted to see - which is how Instagram videos currently work.
