"The eruption of Mount Agung today has impacted several of our flights to and from Bali", budget carrier AirAsia said in a statement, adding at least 27 flights had been canceled or rescheduled.

It's last major eruption was in 1963 and killed about 1,200 people.

The regional volcanic ash advisory centre in Darwin said winds could carry the ash southwest toward Bali's global airport and Java, Indonesia's most densely populated island.

"Due to volcanic ash cloud caused by Mount Agung in Bali, it is now not safe to operate flights to or from Denpasar Airport", Jetstar said in a statement.

Australian visitor Rod Bird came early to the airport only to be told his flight back to Perth had been cancelled for the second time.

Qantas also turned back two Melbourne and Sydney flights to the island, and delayed two more from Denpasar.

More than 20 flights across Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin and Air Asia were disrupted between Thursday night and this morning due to the ash cloud moving toward Denpasar airport.

Some 446 domestic and global flights have been cancelled after the volcano roared backed to life, affecting about 75,000 passengers.

Today there were 30 tremors recorded from the volcano in the last six hours with authorities reporting activity from the site in the last few days.

The holiday plans of thousands of Aussies have been thrown into chaos, with Bali's Mount Agung volcano forcing the closure of the island's worldwide airport.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 250 million people, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The Indonesian tourist island of Bali closed its global airport on Friday, stranding thousands of travellers, as the Mount Agung volcano gushed a 2,500-metre column of ash and smoke.
