The Swiss needs to win the title on Sunday - it would be his 10th at the event - to remain world No. 1 heading into Wimbledon.

Roger Federer extended his grass-court winning streak to 20 matches as he beat Denis Kudla in straight sets to reach the final of the Halle Open.

Both players traded early breaks of serve in the second set before Ebden broke the world No 1 for a second time but was unable to serve out at 5-4, as Federer hit three backhand winners in the game.

Federer extended his grass-court winning streak to 18 matches, including his titles in Stuttgart last week and at Halle and Wimbledon past year.

Kudla progressed to only his second semi-final at ATP tour-level when he roared back from a 2-5 deficit in the second set and saved a set point in the process.

Croatia's Borna Coric on Saturday advanced to the Halle Open final after his Spanish opponent Roberto Bautista Agut was forced to withdraw due to physical issues.

Fourth seed Bautista Agut defeated Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 while Croatian Coric eliminated Italy s Andreas Seppi 7-5, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Cilic continued his magnificent form at Queen's this afternoon by beating Nick Kyrgios in the semi-finals 7-6, 7-6.

"I created quite a few opportunities, but maybe I was a bit tentative at times", said Federer, whose victory was his 18th in succession on grass.

"I'm just hoping to play another good match in the final".

Roger Federer is looking to win back to back ATP titles as he gets ready to play ATP Halle in Germany. "You have to react well and I think I did well in the end".

"I can take a lot a lot of positives out of today's match for the semis tomorrow".

A lapse of concentration from Kudla in the 11th game allowed Federer to grab the only break point on offer before the Swiss served out the match in just under an hour and a half.

The first set on Friday was decided in a tiebreaker while the Swiss had to twice recover from a break down in the second to secure a tight victory in 88 minutes.
