Dave Greenwood, director of public safety for Pensacola Beach, told the Pensacola News Journalsea lice are actually tiny jellyfish larvae and jellyfish cells.
Lifeguards at Pensacola Beach raised purple flags on Tuesday, warning beachgoers that there was risky marine life in the water - tiny jellyfish larvae known as sea lice. Since sea lice sting humans when they are trapped beneath clothes, women and girls may be better off in a bikini rather than a one-piece bathing suit in the water.
They cannot survive outside of warm water and will not latch unto the body once a person gets out of water. These small pests can get caught in the clothing of swimmers, and contact with the skin can produce a sting through nematocysts, or small stinging structures that burst upon contact, according to the Florida Department of Health.
So what is sea lice and how can you avoid it?
Scientists discourage the use of the term because it can cause confusion - there is a parasite that only affects fish also called sea lice. Officials say cases peak from March through August and that shifting currents are to blame.
Sea lice can not live outside of the water, however they cause human skin to break out with itchy rashes that have bumps and welts.

Do not swim when "sea lice" are present.
Also, avoid wearing t-shirts in the water. Symptoms of "swimmer's itch" include tingling or burning skin, small reddish pimples and tiny blisters. After you remove your bathing suit, shower with warm water.
Take your bathing suit off immediately after ocean exposure.
Symptoms will usually clear up by themselves, but if your symptoms become severe contact your doctor immediately.
