A Washington contractor, who has yet to be named, said its files on "secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile" had been hacked.

The hackers targeted a contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military entity based in Newport, Rhode Island, the unnamed officials said without identifying the contractor, according to the Post.

Chinese state-sponsored hackers breached a U.S. Navy contractor and stole huge amounts of highly sensitive intelligence involving secretive military operations, The Washington Post reported Friday.

The officials spoke to the Post "on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation".

A commander of the US Navy, Bill Speaks, said that measures were in place requiring companies to notify the government when a "cyber incident" had occurred on networks that contained "controlled unclassified information".

Security professionals have long observed Chinese spies conducting cyberattacks against USA defense contractors in order to spy on military capabilities.

Following the Post's report, Defense Secretary James Mattis directed the Pentagon's Inspector General to investigate the incident.

The Post "agreed to withhold certain details about the compromised missile project at the request of the Navy, which argued that their release could harm national security". "The news comes as the Trump administration is seeking to secure Beijing's support in persuading North Korea to give up nuclear weapons, even as tensions persist between the U.S. and China over trade and defence matters", The Washington Post said.

But, it has not been disclosed what the Sea Dragon project is.

Military experts said the breach signaled that China could be working to complicate the Navy's ability to defend US allies in Asia amid a conflict with Beijing in the region.
