Trump expects denuclearization process to begin Check out my ride: Trump shows Kim Jong Un 'The Beast'

"My meeting with Chairman Kim was honest, direct and productive", Trump said in a media availability following the meeting. We're going to take care of a very big and unsafe problem for the rest of the world.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States", said Trump, his arms folded in defensive and bellicose body language.

President Donald Trump says he gave North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a video that laid out the opportunities of their historic meeting.

"We have chose to leave the past behind", Kim said through a translator, at the signing table.

This contrasted with Kim, who had comparatively less to lose, having already scored a major win through Trump's agreement to meet him.

The US president also said Kim had accepted an invitation to visit the White House sometime in the future.

Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

The statement added that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is to take part in further negotiations with the North "at the earliest possible date". He earlier said the event should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.

He left the summit site before Trump's news conference and didn't address reporters on his own.

President Donald Trump wrapped up his five-hour nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with surprisingly warm words and hope for "a bright new future" for Kim's isolated and impoverished nation.

The ceremony concluded a summit that appeared impossible just one year ago, when both men's threats against each other fueled a growing nuclear crisis.

Trump noted that the summit was just the beginning of an "arduous process", and noted that sanctions against the North Korean regime would remain in place, but held out great potential for peace and prosperity.

"The past. and the old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles on our way forward".

Boarding his plane, Trump said "there was nothing more we could have done" at the summit.

The pair shook hands, held talks together and ate lunch accompanied by advisers. The North Korean leader's sister and close confidante Kim Yo Jong was among the lunch party. A lot of progress.

Following the historic meeting, Trump announced that denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula would begin "very quickly".

The deal released later in the day explained that the U.S.is "committed to provide security guarantees" to North Korea in return for Pyongyang's "firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization".

Kim Sung-Chull, a professor at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University, described the summit as "politically successful", noting that it is missing some crucial details on denuclearisation.

The single currency reversed modest gains made on Monday after assurances from Italy that it would not leave the European Union calmed investors' nerves.

Trump had lowered expectations for the results of the summit in the last couple weeks, saying it was the start of a process meant for the two leaders to get to know each other.

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ghasemi on Monday warned North Korean leader not to trust Trump as the U.S. has a history of "quitting treaties and violating their commitments".

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity", NBC News reported Trump saying at a press conference in Canada at the weekend, prior to his departure for Singapore.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the USA was "prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously".
