"Any woman with early-stage breast cancer age 75 or younger should have the 21-gene expression test and discuss the results with her doctor to guide her decision to the right therapy".

"There are side effects to it, joint aches and hot flashes, but certainly significantly less than chemotherapy", CBS News medical contributor Dr. David Agus, a cancer specialist, said on "CBS This Morning" Monday.

"The study should have a huge impact on doctors and patients - its findings will greatly expand the number of patients who can forgo chemotherapy without compromising their outcomes", said Kathy Albain, chair of oncology research at Loyola University School of Medicine, in Chicago, USA, and co-author of the study. "We originally, years ago, just did surgery, and then for many many years, everybody got chemotherapy, and now we know that we have these anti-hormonal drugs and pills that women can take". Patients who were given a combination of the chemotherapy drug gemcitabine (Gemzar) and radiotherapy before surgery survived an average of 17.1 months.

However an estimated 25% of patients stop within two years because they can not endure the side effects, lead author Dr Sherry Shen, of the New York Presbyterian Hospital, said.

Between 10 to 15 in 100 patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are eligible for surgery.

"This is a rapidly evolving area of research in pancreatic cancer, with other combination chemotherapy regimens being tested that may be even more effective both in tumour shrinkage and long-term prognosis".

Nelson said this new information gives hope that one day we may live in a world without breast cancer.

For example, another study at the conference found that Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda worked better than chemo as initial treatment for most people with the most common type of lung cancer, and with far fewer side effects. The trial enrolled 10,273 women with this type of breast cancer at 1,182 sites in the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Peru.

Dr. Jennifer Litton at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, agreed, but said, "Risk to one person is not the same thing as risk to another". It was first issued in 1998 and has been reissued multiple times since, and has raised more than $86 million for breast cancer research. These come from small, early stage studies through to large randomised clinical trials.

There was no significant change among non-obese patients.
