BF strips Golovkin of middleweight title

Shannon Reynolds | 09 June, 2018, 21:44

On June 6, 2018 the International Boxing Federation, IBF, chose to strip Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) of its Middleweight title. GGG failed to follow their guidelines by not scheduling a fight with the IBF No. 1 opponent Sergiy Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10 KOs). After Golovkin chose to fight Vanes Martirosyan on May 5, the IBF did not sanction the fight and so the title was not on the line in the fight. They were asking to have their shot at the IBF title next, but they never asked for him to be stripped.

Although Golovkin's goal has always been to join Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor as the only fighters in middleweight history to hold all four recognized titles at the same time, the timing of his mandated fight against the high-risk, low-reward Derevyanchenko clashed with his hopes of securing a September pay-per-view rematch with Alvarez. "Then, as the IBF has behaved in relation to Gennady, is sheer injustice", - said the boxer's promoter Tom Leffler in the comments to BoxingScene. He would have had until August 3 to prepare for the fight, but Golovkin never agreed.

"Gennady has agreed to come off his 50-50 demand", Loeffler added to ESPN.

Secondly, the IBF gave GGG a deadline to agree in writing to fight Derevyanchenko.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya said negotiations for the September bout were dead in the water on Tuesday - after Golovkin refused to back away from demanding a 50-50 split of the money. That fight, scheduled for May 5 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, was canceled because the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Alvarez for six months for failing two performance-enhancing drug tests in February. Now ranking first line is Derevyanchenko, the second position is vacant, and in third place is Daniel Jacobs, which promoter Oscar De La Hoya wants to put on a fight with Alvarez Saulem. "That's the fight we want".
