PA Dixons Carphone admitted a huge data breach involving 5.9 million payment cards
13 June, 2018, 17:58
Retailer Dixons Carphone has gone public about a hack attack involving 5.9 million payment cards and 1.2 million personal data records.
Dixons Carphone will be contacting the 1.9 million people who have had their personal data breached and says it has already plugged the hole in its systems.
The breach was uncovered by Dixons Carphone this week, but apparently took place back in July 2017, when hackers tried to access a processing system used by its Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores.
Dixons shares fell as much as 4.9 percent in London.
The company said that of the cards not secured with chip and pin, none were reported to have been misused, the rest of the cards should be secure.
"Cybercrime is a continual battle for business today and we are determined to tackle this fast-changing challenge", Chief Executive Officer Alex Baldock said in the statement.
Getty Dixons Carphone data breach How many customers were affected by data breach
Yesterday also saw Yahoo's United Kingdom arm fined £250,000 for a data breach in 2014 which affected more than 500 million users. In the 2015 incident, hackers exposed the personal details of more than 3 million customers and some employees.
Last month Dixons Carphone warned on profits and said it would have to close shops, wiping more than 500 million pounds off its market value.
Dixons Carphone said it had immediately notified the relevant card companies so that they could protect customers. It said that while its investigation is ongoing, no evidence of fraudulent data use has been found.
The company does not reveal when its systems were compromised; nor exactly when it discovered the intrusion; nor how long it took to launch an investigation - writing only that: "As part of a review of our systems and data, we have determined that there has been unauthorised access to certain data held by the company".
"The protection of our data has to be at the heart of our business, and we've fallen short here".
Because the data breach dates back to a year ago it will be dealt with by the ICO under the powers of the Data Protection Act 1998 and not the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which went into effect on May 25. It also confirms it has informed the UK's data watchdog the ICO, financial conduct regulator the FCA, and the police. Baldock added that Dixons Carphone has also "added extra security measures" to its systems.
