Toddlers Consume More 'Added Sugar' Than The Recommended Amount For Adults

Almost 98 to 99 percent of the sugar consumed by 1- and 2-year-olds was added sugar.
Kirsten Herrick, the lead author of the study and a nutritional epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a statement that this is the first time the body has looked at how much added sugar children below the age of two eat.
Even if the food sounds healthy, it can contain a large dose of added sugar.
The researchers arrived at this finding after conducting a survey with parents and their children who were between the ages of 6 and 23 months old. By the time the children were between 19 to 23 months of age, 99 percent were taking in an average of 7 teaspoons of added sugar per day.
According to the results, the researchers found that numerous children in the study ate more added sugar than the recommended amount for adults.
Sugars added to soda or candy or processed foods are usually just that, sugar.
Parents of 800 children aged 6 to 23 months were questioned on what their child's "added sugar" consumption was in a 24-hour period. The team analysed the amount of sugar consumed by checking on amounts of cane sugar, honey, other forms of sugar such as high-fructose corn syrup etc. Sugars found naturally in fruits, vegetables and milk were not included in the analysis as were artificial zero-calorie sweeteners. "Our results show that added sugar consumption begins early in life and exceeds current recommendations".
Researchers found that many children under the age of 2 in the United States are eating more added sugar than the recommended amount for adults.
Accordingly, kids between 1 and 2 years of age were consuming added sugar nearly exclusively and the consumed amount is equal to 7 teaspoons of sugar per day. "These data may be relevant to the upcoming 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans".
These properties of added sugar contributes to its effects. Added sugar consumption rose with age.
The researchers also found that 60 percent of children get added sugar in their diet before turning a year old. For adult men, the limit is 9 teaspoons or less of added sugar per day.
"The easiest way to reduce added sugars in your own diet and your kids' diet is to choose foods that you know don't have them, like fresh fruits and vegetables", Herrick advises.
The 2015 to 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that sweetened beverages are the major source of added sugars in typical U.S. diets-in fact, they account for 47% of all added sugars consumed by Americans. Previous research suggests most Americans exceed those limits. There were no differences in added sugar consumption by race among infants 6-11 months. "When hefty doses of these types of added sugars are eaten, it can lead to weight gain and poorly controlled blood sugar levels".
