Northeast B.C.'s unemployment rate was the second-highest of any region in B.C. The lowest rate of unemployment was recorded in the Lower Mainland where only 4.4 percent of the labour force was without work, while the next lowest rate on Vancouver Island was 5.2 percent.

Among over 35 other major cities across the country included in the study, St. John's Newfoundland has the highest unemployment rate, at 8.7%. In Victoria, the rate fell to 3.9 per cent, down from 4.2 per cent in April.

Nationally, Statistics Canada said the economy lost 7,500 jobs last month as full-time positions fell by 31,000.

On a national level, Canada lost 7,500 jobs in May on a month-to-month basis, while the unemployment rate remained at 5.8% for the fourth consecutive month. Despite the increase in the unemployment rate for the fifth straight month, the region only lost around 100 jobs from April to May.

Barrie's unemployment rate has been on a slight decline since March.

In accommodation and food services, employment rose by 18,000 in May, driven by growth in British Columbia.

Those numbers were offset by an increase in part-time job creation, leaving Canada's unemployment rate unchanged at 5.8 per cent.
