President Donald Trump is directing the Commerce Department to begin an investigation into whether tariffs are needed on the import of automobiles into the United States.

Trump has regularly complained that other countries impose higher tariffs on imported vehicles than the US does.

The White House says Trump has asked Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to consider whether imports of cars and trucks and automotive parts threaten US national security.

"Core industries such as automobiles and automotive parts are critical to our strength as a Nation", he said.

Turkey has made a decision to impose taxes on a number of US goods in response to steel and aluminum import tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Background: In March, Trump imposed global tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum, leading to trade disputes with the European Union and China, among others.

Trump brought a little-used weapon to his fight to protect auto workers: Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

If implemented under Section 232, the tariffs could only come after an investigation by the Commerce Department, which would likely take several months.

Trump - whose protectionist platform helped launch him to the White House - has repeatedly floated the notion of steep tariffs that would shield the United States auto industry.

The proposed import tax was seen as an additional pressure point in the negotiations, with Mexico and Canada already scheduled to lose their exemption from Trump's metals tariffs in little more than a week.

Initial reaction to the idea of an import tax on cars based on national security needs was unfriendly, with one veteran trade lawyer saying it would prompt "pant-wetting laughter - followed by retaliation" among US trading partners.

By threatening a tariff on all imported cars, Mexico could be pressured into the tightening of the rules.

He has specifically targeted Germany, and argued that American cars are slapped with higher tariffs than those imposed on European autos.

The president appears to have previewed the internal debate with an early-morning tweet: "There will be big news coming soon for our great American Autoworkers".

A person familiar with the matter told Breitbart News that the Commerce Department was expected to provide the White House with details of the plans late Wednesday.
