Tim Cook Urges Grads to 'Think Different' During Duke University Commencement Speech

"The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer - if our customer was our product", he said. "We reject the excuse that getting the most out of technology means trading away your right to privacy", he said, as reported by CNN Sunday. Sometime into invoking the name of Steve Jobs, however, the Apple CEO touched on the matter of privacy.

This comment echoed with this year's Facebook data controversy, which Cook heavily criticized after it was revealed that political data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica was able to breach into the data and information of almost 90 million Facebook users. RSA recently disclosed that 51% of younger millennials (18-to-24) surveyed were concerned with personal information, particularly on social media, being used for blackmail. Doing the right thing is baked within the culture of most tech companies here.

Cook has previously said that because Apple profits from selling its products rather than user information, his company is safe from privacy scandals like the one dogging Facebook.

And while the message could just have easily been contrasted with the way Google collects user data, it is not the first time Cook has made a veiled comment about the Facebook crisis. Apple is not ideal, by any stretch of the imagination, and the company certainly has other issues to contend with as well. As for how he would handle such a privacy concern, Cook has said that such a scenario isn't possible for his company.

"Technology today is integral to nearly all aspects of our lives and most of the time it's a force for good", Cook said then.

Well, Cook's speech encapsulated everything from climate change and its effect to Apple's use of the renewable energy and certainly telling the graduates how important an obligation it is for them to leave the world a better place than they had found it.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook may have something to do with Donald Trump's new stance on trade with China, with the executive telling Bloomberg he raised the issue of tariffs at a meeting in late April. Being thoughtful and respectful when it's in our care.
