Typically water temperatures need to be at least 80 degrees for a tropical storm to form.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is projected to make landfall between Pensacola and New Orleans late Monday morning, three full days before traditional hurricane season begins on June 1.

He expected the heaviest rain to hold off until late Saturday and linger until perhaps Tuesday.

The storm was officially announced a day after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2018 hurricane season forecast release. Right now, heavy flooding rain, gusty winds, and isolated tornadoes are possible for South Florida, according to Bryan Norcross, a hurricane specialist at The Weather Channel.

The Government of Mexico has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Tulum to Cabo Catoche. Tropical storm and storm surge watches could be required for portions of the area later today or tonight. The system is not expected to directly impact Virginia, until maybe the end of next week.

While some models project Alberto's strongest sustained winds will reach 65 miles per hour, the biggest threat for many in the northern Gulf states - including the Wiregrass area - is heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service says the Sarasota-Manatee area will continue to have afternoon and evening thunderstorms Thursday, with scattered to numerous daily showers and thunderstorms through the holiday weekend.

Forecasters and officials have warned for days that, regardless of tropical development, this system could dump up to 8 inches of rain on our already saturated state.

Prior to 2002 subtropical storms were not given names, but the Tropical Prediction Center issued forecasts and warnings on them similar to those for tropical cyclones. This low is expected to move northward affecting only the central and eastern Gulf coast.

At this point, the Charlotte area could get two to four inches of rain, with some locations getting as much as five inches. For more information, consult products from your local weather office.

The main effects from this system will be heavy rain, not winds, forecasters say.
