Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.

As of May 15, 172 people in 32 states had been sickened in the outbreak, an increase of 23 people and three states since the last update a week earlier.

California still has the most cases, 39, followed by Pennsylvania (21); Minnesota (12); Idaho (11); New Jersey, Montana, Arizona, Alaska (eight each); Washington (seven); OH (six); NY and MI (five each); Georgia (four); Wisconsin, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Colorado (three each); Connecticut, Illinois, North Dakota (two each); Florida, Texas, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia (one each). Twenty people have developed HUS.

So far there has only been one death recorded, in California.

"It's a person who apparently eats a lot of lettuce", he said. The latest reported illness started on May 2, 2018. People who got sick range from 1 to 88 years, with a median age of 29. This E. coli outbreak has been considered as the largest in the USA which has shattered the families and people have been admitted to hospital due to bacteria spread causing infection and chronic health problems.

Romaine lettuce has a shelf life of about 21 days. "So expect the outbreak to keep growing, and expect more lawsuits".

This investigation is ongoing and health officials will provide more information as it becomes available. Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, throw out any romaine lettuce if you're uncertain about where it was grown. The harvest season is now over.

Health officials said Wednesday that it is "unlikely" that any romaine lettuce grown in Yuma is still available as more E. coli cases are being reported nationwide.

"It is unlikely that any romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region is still available in stores or restaurants due to its 21-day shelf life". Researchers say that they have dozens of farms under supervision that might spread the bacteria through romaine lettuce and are under the provision. They still advise consumers to ask where the romaine they are buying or ordering came from. The symptoms of HUS include little or no urine output, lethargy, pale skin, easy bruising, and bleeding from the nose or mouth. Many of these pathogenic E. coli cause diarrhea and are referred to as diarrheagenic E. coli.
