Rohingyas: Hasina seeks UN Security Council pressure on Myanmar

UN Security Council meet Suu Kyi over Rohingya Rohingyas: Hasina seeks UN Security Council pressure on Myanmar

Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi received a UN Security Council delegation on Monday (Apr 30) in the highest-level diplomatic visit since the start of the Rohingya crisis, which will include a brief tour of violence-hit Rakhine state.

On Monday, the delegation of diplomats from the Council's 15 member countries arrived in Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw, holding meetings with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi as well as General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, UN Spokesperson St├ęphane Dujarric told reporters in NY.

The Security Council envoys are due to travel to Rakhine on Tuesday.

Bangladesh and Burma agreed in December to begin repatriating the refugees in January, but there were concerns among aid workers and Rohingya that they would be forced to return and face unsafe conditions in Myanmar.

They will follow this with a visit to Rakhine state in Myanmar.

Almost 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled from Rakhine State to Bangladesh to flee a military crackdown launched in August that the United Nations and others denounced as "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Zine, with funding from, said the crisis of the Rohingya people is ongoing and it was time to highlight again these youths and their families' harrowing tales of escape and survival.

Today, almost 1 million Rohingya refugees have crossed the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh.

He also told the delegation that the army has been taking action against soldiers who have been found guilty of raping Rohingya girls and women during the crackdown. Both the U.N. and the United States have said that the campaign amounted to ethnic cleansing.

In Rakhine, the delegation is expected to meet local government representatives and civil society.

Pyone Kaythi Naing, a National League for Democracy lawmaker in the lower house of the national parliament, said the diplomats had planned to meet with six members of parliament, but had to cancel because of a flight delay on account of bad weather.

Civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi also met the United Nations delegates on Monday afternoon, urging their understanding of a complex, festering conflict and vowing to repatriate the refugees.

They will seek to push the Myanmar government to implement those requests, diplomats said.

"We will talk to also the officials in Myanmar and we would like to hear from them".

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the UN Security Council on Monday to press Myanmar to take back hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims camped in her country as refugees.

"We want to know very well how we can contribute to the solution and we understand clearly how big the challenge was".

"We have been concerned that things are going slow", Gustavo Meza-Cuadra said.

U.N. agencies on the ground in Cox's Bazar, including the U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA), desperately need renewed financial resources to continue responding to this staggering crisis. "This issue will remain on our agenda and it's one of our priorities".

"We are determined to find an end and a solution for this crisis. But all the parties should show commitments to solve it as soon as possible", the Kuwaiti ambassador said.

"We can not remain silent about it, and when we go back to NY...we will try to explore ways and means to speed up the implementation of the agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar for [the] safe, free, and voluntary and dignified return of the refugees", he said.
