In a meeting on Sunday with Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani revealed that Iran intends to remain committed to the deal- but only if the remaining signatory countries promise to protect Iran's economy from U.S. sanctions.

Rouhani stressed the need to achieve Iran's economic interests as a condition to continuing with the nuclear deal.

Though sanctions were relaxed under an global deal, US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal, casting uncertainty over the deals.

The country's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif too is seeking to salvage the deal, this weekend commencing a tour with the other signatories in the hopes the agreement can be "re-designed" without the U.S.

Sri Lanka and Iran are also in the Asian Clearing Union, an arrangement used by several Asian countries with imprudent central banks that regularly run short of hard currency due to money printing.

"It is clear to me that we can not prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement", Trump continued.

Iran and Sri Lanka signed 5 memoranda of understanding in the presence of the two countries' presidents in Tehran on Sunday to increase bilateral cooperation in different fields, an official news report said.

The three European states have also recommitted to the agreement, but senior cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami told worshippers at Tehran University on Friday that Europe was not to be trusted.

The head of the elite Revolutionary Guards also warned against relying on foreign powers.

"America's exit aims to break the Iranian people's resistance, which is not new. but today's problem is not United States sanctions, it's that some officials look towards outside rather than looking at domestic potentials", Guards commander General Mohammad Ali Jafari said.

With the deal opposed by hardliners at home, some analysts say the pragmatic Rouhani may now be a lame duck leader.

"I am announcing today [May 8] that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal", he stated at the White House.
