Sergei Lavrov, speaking after meeting German foreign minister Heiko Maas on May 10 in Moscow, said it was important that any new USA sanctions did not ruin the 2015 accord between Tehran and six world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said Germany viewed President Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear pact as wrong, adding that Berlin hopes Washington can still be persuaded not to punish foreign firms doing business there. The accord stipulates the gradual lifting of anti-Iranian sanctions in exchange for Tehran curbing its nuclear program and allowing inspections to ensure that the nature of the program is peaceful.

"After these talks, if we are assured that we can achieve what we wanted from the deal through cooperation with other parties, JCPOA will remain in place", he noted.

The White House said May 9 that new sanctions would be announced probably as early as next week, but gave no details.

About Maas said in an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag published on Sunday, may 13.

Russian Federation and Germany say efforts must be taken to preserve the nuclear deal with Iran following the US exit.

The leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom have also expressed their regret over the USA decision in a joint statement, stressing their countries' commitment to the JCPOA. A source in the Iranian Foreign Ministry also told TASS that Zarif will pay a visit to Moscow on May 14 for consultations on the nuclear deal.

"It is important to learn about the rules concerning the so-called secondary effects, that is, what does it mean for a European company's America business if it continues to do business with Iran", Maas said. Zarif will visit China on Saturday, before traveling to Moscow on Monday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated his country's commitment to the deal, saying Teheran will continue to implement its liabilities.

Meanwhile, the European Union on Thursday called on "all regional actors to show restraint" after Israel carried out strikes against what it called Iranian targets in Syria, in response to Iranian rockets fired towards its forces.
