California is the first state close to adoption of a nationwide mandate that requires solar panels to be installed on low-rise apartment buildings and new homes from 2020 in a bid to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

While this requirement that all new homes be solar powered is likely to increase the cost of a new house purchase, experts estimate that the resulting lower energy bills will make it a significant net cost-savings over time for homeowners.

"This is an undeniably historic decision for the state and the US California has always been our nation's biggest solar champion, and its mass adoption of solar has generated huge economic and environmental benefits, including bringing tens of billions of dollars of investment into the state", said Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association. "The buildings that Californians buy and live in will operate very efficiently while generating their own clean energy".

Turkey's solar power production saw a yearly increase of 175 percent to 2.8 million megawatt-hours in 2017. Vivek Sharma, Senior Director, Crisil Infrastructure Advisory, said: "The Central Electricity Authority and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission will have to come out with norms that can allow the sale of hybridised power generated from existing projects".

California, the most populous state, with almost 40 million people, has positioned itself as the nationwide leader on clean energy, pushing for more electric vehicles on the roads and lower emissions from homes and commercial buildings. As former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who now serves as UN Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, said, "Americans will honor and fulfill the Paris Agreement by leading from the bottom up - and there isn't anything Washington can do to stop us". Community-shared solar generation equipment will also be an option.

In accordance with Turkish EMRA's revised legislation in January, Turkish citizens are allowed to install solar panels with a maximum capacity of 10 kilowatts with less red-tape than previously. The move is a bold and visionary one, as stated by an associate at the Energy Commission.
