Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Headed for No. 1 Debut

Childish Gambino Wants People to Play Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Headed for No. 1 Debut

The Toronto rapper's single, "God's Plan" held the top of the Billboard charts for almost three months straight before being replaced by his second single of the year, "Nice For What".

Compared with the projections for the current chart leader, Drake's "Nice For What", Gambino's track has a fair chance of edging out the Toronto superstar. The song should amass over 50 million US streams in the tracking week, along with over 8 million in radio airplay audience and 60k pure copies sold. The results will be released Monday (May 14). This Is America strikes a chord with Britain as this week's highest new entry on the Official Chart, debuting at Number 14 this week and propelling the Atlanta and Community actor to a personal best, his first UK Top 40 hit as a lead artist. Last year, the Awaken, My Love! single "Redbone" just missed the top 10 by landing at No. 12 off the strength of Get Out's move into awards season. None of his other songs ever made it past No. 64. However, Gambino told "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" that he hasn't seen too much of the online fanfare.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk at the Grey Goose Party on Friday night at Cannes Film Festival, Joan said that the video for This Is America - has been read as a take on gun violence and issues facing African Americans in America in 2018 - is "not just a music video".

And then I think, lastly, but what I really challenge people on is, you know, art is going to make people uncomfortable at times.
