The unemployment rate in the Rose City has gone up slightly in April to 5.5 per cent. It was the monthly reading's largest annual increase since October 2012.

That includes a drop to 6 per cent in the Medicine Hat-Lethbridge region from 6.8 per cent in April 2017 and 6.5 per cent in March.

Wage growth hit its highest level in almost six years, with a 3.6 per cent increase over 2017.

The decline of 1,100 jobs reported by Statistics Canada on Friday was well short of economists' forecasts for an increase of 17,400.

The participation rate for the London area (the percentage of local adults either working or looking for jobs) continues to edge up to 61.2 per cent, but is still down 0.8 per cent from a year ago and well below the national rate of 65.4 per cent.
