A new report from the New York Times suggests that keyless cars are responsible for causing the deaths of dozens of people since 2006. Of those, over half come with a keyless ignition system. If a driver leaves a vehicle running in a garage, the vehicle could emit enough carbon monoxide - which doesn't have a color or scent - to kill the driver if the driver's home is connected to its garage.

Keyless-ignition cars offer the convince of not having to worry about using a physical key to start and stop the vehicle. In addition to the more than 28 people who have died due to the ignition issues, more than 45 have been injured. By 2011, the engineering group issued a report calling on automakers to install an "externally audible or visual alert" when all doors are closed, the key fob is not present and the engine is still running.

According to the report, those with keyless cars sometimes mistakingly believe their vehicles are off after parking them.

When he arrived at his school in Sullivan he was greeted by 70 Terre Haute police officers and Vigo County sheriff's deputies. All five-year-old Dakota Pitts asked for was to be taken to school by one of his dad's co-workers and friends.

A keyless vehicle has a key fob that, when in close proximity to the auto, transmits a signal and allows the driver to start the vehicle with a touch of a button. To date, although automobile makers have installed warning systems into their keyless-ignition cars voluntarily, there are no universe standards for each system. That way, the engine turns off, thereby removing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

According to a spokesman for Toyota in an interview with the BBC, "Customer safety is always our priority and Toyota's Smart Key System has and continues to meet or exceed all relevant safety standards".
