"By its actions, the USA is increasingly exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and actually conniving at terrorists who have been tormenting the Syrian people for seven years and provoking a new wave of refugees from that country and the region as a whole", he said.

"It is unlikely that we will have to sink the Donald Cook".

The US State Department said the United States has proof at "a very high level of confidence" that the Syrian government carried out the attack but is still working to identify the mix of chemicals used.

In announcing the strikes, Trump directly blamed Russian Federation for enabling the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons.

Over the past week, pro-Kremlin officials, independent analysts and the state-allied news media here all described the situation in Syria as a uniquely unsafe moment.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Theresa May held a special cabinet meeting to consider whether Britain should join the USA and France in possible military action. And we have to know that we're taking every precaution necessary, should we take action.

US Ambassdor to the UN Nikki Haley said on Friday that the US had enough "proof" to act on Syria, but that the president was taking measures to avoid unwanted repercussions.

"Russia has trashed the credibility of the council", she said.

Trump's warlike tweets came in response to a warning from Russia's ambassador to Beirut, who took to a television network run by the armed group Hezbollah to declare that any USA missiles would be shot down "as well as the sources they were fired from".

Putin said the U.S. used a "staged chemical attack" against civilians to carry out the Friday night strike, TASS news agency reported.

France attack Syria; Russia blames United Kingdom of staging the chemical attack
The United States , France and Britain defended their military action as legal during the Security Council meeting. The US and its allies, Nebenzia alleged, are setting the stage to "unleash a military scenario against Syria".

Russia's envoy to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said his country has warned the US against striking Syria, stating that "Russia has warned USA representatives, publicly as well as through proper channels, over the grave consequences that could arise if these strikes happen and whether deliberately or otherwise Russian citizens are hurt".

"We are confident that we have crippled Syria's chemical weapons program".

But May also said the strikes were not about "regime change".

Moscow's threat to down USA missiles came from its ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, who said it was based on previous statements by President Vladimir Putin and the Russian armed forces chief of staff.

The Ministry claims the air strikes were a response to the "success" of Al Assad's Syrian army in liberating their territory from global terrorism.

The United States didn't waste any time in disputing Russia's accusations.

Putin spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and urged him to do nothing to destabilise Syria.

Both Russia and Iran, Assad's other main ally, have in recent days warned his enemies against military action, underlining their commitment to the Syrian government they have armed and supported through years of conflict.

The warning from Moscow came as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that increasing tensions over Syria could lead to "full-blown military escalation".

Trump has made it clear he plans to make the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, and perhaps his Russian and Iranian backers, pay for the latest alleged toxic gas atrocity in the war-wracked country.
