Montenegro's ruling Democratic Party of Socialists has declared party leader Milo Djukanovic the victor of the presidential election.

Mladen Bojanic, a businessman backed by an alliance of parties, including some wanting closer ties with Russian Federation, is seen trailing Djukanovic, who has dominated politics either as prime minister or president of the Adriatic country of only 620,000 people, with 30 percent of the votes in opinion polls.

Voters in Montenegro are casting ballots in a presidential election, with former Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic expected to win after his party defied Russian Federation and took the small Balkan nation into North Atlantic Treaty Organisation previous year.

Djukanovic, the country's dominant politician, and his Democratic Party of Socialists have ruled Montenegro for almost 30 years. Bojanic said Djukanovic "cannot be the solution because he is the creator of the instability and chaos that we witness in the streets of Montenegro".

Bojanic, the second ranked candidate asked his voters not to understand the result as a defeat, but as a basis for future struggle against the ruling party and refused to congratulate Djukanovic on the victory.

Djukanovic, the country's dominant politician, and his Democratic Party of Socialists have ruled Montenegro for almost 30 years. President Filip Vujanovic of that party is not running due to term limits.

First Warning Forecast: More clouds, warm, storms move in late
However, there will be more clouds developing during the day as our latest cold front approaches from the west. Meteorologists predicted a high chance for damaging winds and a slight possibility of hail and tornadoes.

About 530,000 voters can choose among several candidates.

Djukanovic has served both as prime minister and president in several mandates since becoming the youngest head of government in Europe at the age of 29 in 1991.

Surveys indicate Djukanovic can win more than half of those votes and avoid a runoff.

However, Mr Djukanovic has claimed that the opposition wants to turn the country into a "Russian province" and threaten Montenegro's multicultural way of life.

Djukanovic was prime minister during a tense October 2016 parliamentary election when authorities said they thwarted pro-Russian coup attempt created to prevent the country from joining North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. He hopes next to steer the country into the European Union.

During the campaign, opposition candidates have accused Djukanovic of fostering cronyism, nepotism, corruption and ties with organized crime, which he denies.
