Richard Osborn-Brooks was arrested on suspicion of murder after he allegedly faced down two burglars who broke into his house in South East London on Wednesday morning.

Eighteen-year-old Israel "Izzy" Ogunsola loved soccer and studied computer programming.

"The man, aged 38, sustained a stab wound to the upper body", a police statement said.

A well-wisher visiting the scene, who asked not to be named, said he had worked with the victim doing security and was a good friend of his brother.

There have been multiple calls for him to be freed from neighbours and politicians.

"He was just protecting himself after all".

"A person should have the right to defend themselves, their belongings and their home". The 12-year resident of South Park Crescent said she recognised the pensioner's face but did not know him.

Val Barclay (63) said: "He deserves a medal". We have done good work on the watch including shutting down a brothel house and implementing metal gates to stop people walking down the alley ways.

"He almost died. They had to save his life".

An accomplice attempted to drag him towards a van but eventually left, according to a witness. "If a sufficient number of people feel frightened, they can look on knife-carrying as a way to make themselves feel safe, but it actually makes them less safe", he said. "I think he's gone".

"The man on the ground was wearing a blue T-shirt and it was pulled up. His pupils were completely dilated".

The second suspect involved in the burglary fled the scene and is still being hunted by the police.

Following his arrest, there had been cries from different quarters for Mr Osborn-Brooks's release.

"I don't accept Mr Lammy's claim that the police have "lost control" of crime in London". A forensics tent which had been outside the front door was also taken down.

The dead suspect's next of kin have been informed.
