The ruling on Monday by a United States federal judge in California comes as the social network is snared in a scandal over the mishandling of 87 million users' data ahead of the 2016 United States presidential election. But despite Facebook's success in getting the case moved from IL to San Francisco, the judge ruled that "plaintiffs' claims are sufficiently cohesive to allow for a fair and efficient resolution on a class basis".

The technology at the heart of all this is Facebook's "tag suggestion" feature, which suggests who may be in a photo based on an existing database of faces.
The study found 17% said they deleted the Facebook app from their phones, 11% said they deleted it from other devices, and another 9% said they deleted their accounts completely due to concerns regarding privacy.
