Facebook Now Says More Users Hit By Data Scandal

Sandra Phillips | 07 April, 2018, 02:16

According to the CNBC report, the man behind Facebook's attempted hook-up with users' medical data was Dr Freddy Abnousi, an interventional cardiologist, who describes himself on LinkedIn as "leading confidential projects at Facebook".

Facebook revealed on Wed- nesday that an estimated 87 million users around the world had had their personal data harvested by a quiz app downloaded by 305,000 people because of the way the social network allowed apps to access data about their friends.

While the data shared would obscure personally identifiable information, such as the patient's name, Facebook proposed using a common computer science technique called "hashing" to match individuals who existed in both sets.

It was the most damning exchange of the interview, in my opinion. It was also "conducting a broader investigation into how social media platforms were used in political campaigning".

The past several weeks have been fraught for Facebook as it continues to deal with the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica revelations.

"However, we do know that 15 people in Ireland installed thisisyourdigitallife, and up to 44,687 people in Ireland may have been friends with someone who installed the app, and, therefore, may have been affected".

The referendum technology pledge comes after Facebook admitted that nearly 45,000 Irish people were caught up in the Cambridge Analytica data-sharing scandal, which has now affected 87m people in total, more than the 50m that were initially reported.

Examples of accounts that are deemed fake include those from the Russian Internet Research Agency, which Facebook says created bogus Facebook accounts that were seen by 127 million people in the past two years. But waiting until it was confronted with evidence of the deletions and public backlash shows Facebook is only being transparent with users when forced. Outside experts believe they could have been identity thieves, scam artists or shady data brokers assembling marketing profiles.

Zuckerberg and Sandberg were silent for five days following the initial report.

Yesterday six Myanmar organisations published an open letter criticising an interview Zuckerberg gave with news site Vox this week.

Since then, they've been on a major offensive, apologizing on national TV and rolling out new privacy policies.

Furthermore, as you have probably guessed, the issue of how Facebook or the hospitals would receive consent from patients appears to have been entirely brushed under the carpet. Facebook says the information was illegally transferred to the political marketing firm by an app developer. In addition, the company is removing the option to search for users by entering a phone number or an email address. But many users had assumed their chats on Messenger were private. Apps will no longer be able to access the member list of a group.

Others didn't appreciate Sandberg's message that without user data, Facebook would have to become a paid service.

Congress has been interested in increasing regulation on Facebook due to its size and the myriad of issues it's facing.

The moves are meant to clamp down on fake pages and accounts such as those used to disrupt the 2016 presidential elections in the US and elsewhere.

Sandberg's appearance on the Today Show, and Zuckerberg's conference call, came ahead of Zuckerberg's scheduled appearance next week before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Separately, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and various authorities in Europe are investigating. He later transferred the data to political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which worked on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
